Frequently asked questions
What is deducted before the estate is divided?
First funeral costs, then debts, then any bequest (wasiyyah) of up to one third to people who are not heirs. The remaining estate is divided among the heirs.
Why does a son receive twice the share of a daughter?
Surah An-Nisa 4:11 sets this ratio. Scholars explain it by the son’s financial duty to support his family, including his mother and sisters.
What are 'awl and radd?
'Awl applies when fixed shares add up to more than the estate: every share is reduced proportionally. Radd applies when something is left over and there is no residuary heir: the remainder returns to the fixed-share heirs other than the spouse.
Which heirs does this calculator cover?
