Frequently asked questions

Who has to pay zakat?

An adult Muslim whose zakatable wealth, after debts that are due, is at or above the nisab and has been held for one full lunar year (hawl).

Should I use the gold or silver nisab?

Both are valid opinions. The silver nisab is lower, so more people pay zakat and the poor benefit more; many scholars recommend it for cash savings. Others use gold. Choose the one followed by your scholar.

How much is zakat?

2.5% (one fortieth) of your total zakatable wealth, once it reaches the nisab.

Who can receive zakat?

The eight categories named in Surah At-Tawbah 9:60, including the poor, the needy, those in debt and travellers in need.

Is zakat due on jewellery I wear?

Scholars differ. The Hanafi school requires zakat on gold and silver jewellery; the other schools generally exempt jewellery worn in normal use. Include it if you follow the Hanafi view.
